Car Insurance Query

Hi,

DH wants to change our car insurance as it is extortionate!! The car is currently in the garage being repaired after it was hit by an uninsured driver back in May/June.

Would we better off waiting until the repairs are done just to be on the safe side or, given taht the car was insured at the time of the accident can we change when we want to?

Hope that makes sense.

Many thanks

MimiF

I believe that once you've made a claim in any given year, you can't get any refund back on any remaining part of the year and if you are on monthly payments you have to pay the years premium in full. (check the small print on your policy to check, or phone up to ask). So if you paid up front, you can't get anything back. If you are paying monthly, you have to carry on paying until the year is up.
So if this is the case, you will only be losing money if you take out a second insurance policy (plus I think having two sets of insurance at the same time is actually illegal...)
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Not illegal but you would only be able to claim off one policy, or half from each you would not be able to claim the full amount from both insurers

You can change your insurance halfway through, but would have to pay the full premium to your current insurer. As any increases won't take effect until renewal, you might as well wait to see what they quote you, then phone around to compare prices. You have little, if anything, to gain by switching now.

Oh, and thank you Malky! I thought I was the only person on this earth who knew that having two insurance policies was not illegal! I am sane after all!
Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!

No bother gyzmo. But i really cant see why you would want two polices on one car. How much would that confuse things if you were to claim and wanted to claim from both.
Ins co. 1 there half my car
Ins.co 2 there the other half
To much hassle or you could have the two companies ferusing to pay and saying the other i liable.
But yes it is not illegal but it is illegal to claim from two for the exact same thing so i have no idea why you would ever do this.
  • in contrast to previous post u can get a refund for any un used days but it depends on the company, also i belive it IS is illegal to have 2 policys on the same car.

When my uncle was involved in an accident around his renewal date, he had to renew with the company he was with as he was going through a claim at the time so you may need to wait until the claim is finished and work is complete before changing
