Patio door frame

Options
Quick question - we have new pvc patio doors and have had a few problems with them that have now been rectified. However, if we push on the lower edge of the doors/frame there's some 'give' (movement). Is this normal??? Would it present any problems in the long term?

there should be no movement of the frame.
they maybe some small movement on the doors.
sounds like extra frame fixings are required.
    Get some gorm.

is there a space at bottom of the frame???
    Sometimes they slide spacers in...
  • Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure about spacers - the floor has been raised and I can't see the edge of the frame anymore. I'm wondering about the number of fixings though. The doors are French-style, opening outwards, and I can see two large headed screws plus two smaller ones. When I push on the frame it moves even in the region of these screws. One screw in particular doesn't seem to hold the frame in place.

I'm loath to get the glazier back yet again but we're not happy with the way it is :(

    hi

did they use expandable foam arround the frame?

We recently got new windows and doors fitted and they did not use foam. I did query it as any other windows/doors i have seen put in have had this. Fitter recond you do not need it and should not use it as it warps the upvc.

i have just looked at my standard door and and there is aprox 6 frame fixings but also i remember he also used small brackets under the facia.

Get them back, a frame should not move, it has not been fitted properly.

    Get them back out.

Not enough frame fixings or some of them aren't actually 'in' anything.

  • I fit french doors on a almost daily basis
I use a minimum of 4 fixings per side and ALWAYS use expanding foam as a secondary fixing method in addition to the fixxings
The advice about foam distorting the frames is a load of rubbish they will only distort if no mechanical fixings have not been used
Get them back/more fixings /use foam
    cheers
  • Thanks again, everyone :). We are going to raise the issue with our builder (who contracted the glaziers).

There is no foam around the frame, and it seems from your replies that they did not use adequate fixings. Hopefully it can be easily fixed :)

No need for foam, it simply has not been fitted properly.
