What day to move???

When we get to the actual moving point, do you always have to vacate on a Friday, there is no way I will be able to do this as I am pregnant and can't do it on my own and my other half is on a course that won't give him any time off, (I hope he gets the day off for the birth!).

We will be able to do it on the afternoon(after 6ish) and all over the weekend.
Any ideas????

  • I think Friday is generally the best day as then people have the weekend to also do the moving. I think you can pick any day although I also think it has to be a weekday as this is when all the banks are open to do the transfering of money.

    Is there anyone else who could assist with the move whilst your other half is on the course? I'm not sure about moving after 6pm as the banks will have closed by then and you will have to be out of your house (I take it you are selling as well as buying?)

    Failing that you may have to move all your things into storage the weekend before and stay at a friend's house for a night and then move all your things back out of storage for the weekend. Not ideal by any means but maybe worth considering??
  • You do not have to move on a Friday but most people pick that day because if they are working they have the weekend to sort out all the boxes etc.

    Usually if you are selling one home and buying another there will be a chain and the completion date is one that suits everybody. You will have to clear out your old place (usually by about noon), so that the people coming in have "vacant possession”. Estate agents will usually keep hold of any keys until the solicitors tells them that all the funds are in place, this usually happens by early afternoon. You will give yourself no end of problems if the people coming into your old place do not have vacant possession because your settee and beds are still there and they cannot move in.

    Your best bet would be to get a removal firm in and let them take care of it. Expensive if you had planned to move yourself but much cheaper than having to foot the bill for the other people’s storage and hotel until it is all sorted.
  • I have always moved on a monday, at least then if there are any poroblems you have the working week to sort them out, otherwise there are some things that are closed at the weekend.

    I once moved into a house and didn't realise that it had a pre pay elec meter, moved in on the friday and everything was fine but on the saturday the electric went out and the post office had closed so we had no leccy til monday....

    Just a personal experience, I now don't chance it in case, cos there are always teething problems when moving.

    You can negotiate much better deals with removal firms if you move early in the week.

    I've always moved on a Thursday. Its cheaper, although mon-wed could be cheaper still. It also gives Friday to sort out any issues & a chance to relax on Sunday after a couple of days of moving stuff around.
  • Remember that if you are in a chain and everybody's purchase is providing the finance for the move you all have to complete on the same day so you may not have a choice. If you move out before you have to find somewhere to store all your things, you cannot leave all your things in your old place past about noon on completion day because it will not be yours anymore.

    I think I was tempting fate, the lady who is buying our house has had her buyers pull out as they are splitting up. We have agreed to keep it off the market for 2 weeks so she has a chance to see if she can find another buyer. I am expecting more drama, nothing ever goes my way....

  • I would never move on a Friday. We did 4 years ago - we were the 3 people in a chain of 5 and things had been reasonably OK, so Friday seemed sensible. BUT the cash paying developer at the bottom of the chain didn't want to lose any interest on his cash, so didn't transfer his money in time! His purchase went through in time :mad: but the cash "stopped" at the next couple in the chain, who had already moved all their stuff into our house (as you do).

    Their solicitor refused to do a "Move Under License" as it was now approaching 4pm on the Friday afternoon, so they were technically rich but homeless.

    Our stuff was packed onto vans, ready to move into our new (current( house, which we couldn't get keys for as we hadn't actually bought it. Our vendors were going on holiday & had packed their suitcases & passports at the front of their van, so they would be last off & they could dash to the airport...:eek:

    We ended up staying at friends, having to buy some new clothes etc. while hoping the couple living in "our" house would move out again if there was a problem! It was also my daughters 2nd birthday & all her presents were on the van!

    Thankfully it all ended well - were firm friend with the couple who bought our old house, and the git at the bottom of the chain had to pay out hundreds for compensation claims from us all!:j

    Am soon moving again - & NOT on a Friday!
    & as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D



  • I think there are two things here.

    Completion ... this is when the money changes hands, so this has to be a working day of the week i.e. Mon-Fri as the financial institutions don't/can't transfer money at the weekend. You can only move in once you've completed as you don't own the property until then.

    Once you've completed, you can move in whenever you like. So you could, for example, complete on a Wednesday but not move in until the following Saturday.

    However, you have to think about where you will live. If you are currently a homeowner and in a chain, then once you complete you must vacate your current property. So in the example above, if you complete on a Wednesday, then you must move out that day so the buyers (new owners) can move in. Where will you live from Wednesday until Saturday?

    If you rent, it's much easier (in theory) as your LL may allow you to stay for a few more days - provided the LL hasn't arranged for a new tenant to move in, when you complete on your purchase.

    The longer the chain, the longer it takes for the money to arrive at the final buyers. See JustKeepSwimming's post for how things can go wrong.

    But to summarise .. once you complete, the new property is yours and you can move in whenever you like. But watch out if you are also selling, as you may have nowhere to go!

    Yeah and if you are the FTBer whose mortgage/solicitor/bank f&*k up you get hit for the compensation AND all the interest on all the stopped money in the chain! The interest on a small chain of 3 buying a tiny flat was around £1200 as my ex-flatmate found when the transfers f&*ked up! No new sofa for him.
