Fuse box..

Basically we have needed a new fuse box for a while, ours is really really old. Anyway our electric went off tonight the trip switch wouldn't stay on, I phoned an electrician who came straight out, he hasn't fitted the new fuse box on tonight, he is coming back early in the morning to do that, but he has temporarily got the electric back on and told me just to use stuff thats light on electricity such as lights, tv, etc. The quote he has given me is £280.00 in total, that is for the box labour, coming out tonight and in the morning, basically everything. I was just wondering if this was a good quote?

i got a sparky to put one in a property about 4 years ago for 100 pound.(sparky/tutor at a local college)
i would be looking to pay 100 to 150 . cause am tight and scottish.
i have put a new consumer unit in a new install (ill wait for the resident sparky's to shoot me down in flames and start part P in chapter and verse)
i have done it myself and seen a pro do it and it is time consuming
i would say your quote is not the most expensive. since you have already had a callout. And who knows what else could be wrong with leccy0 -

Find typical costs around th country for electrical work here;

FWIW, I'd be charging around £300-350 here in West Yorkshire for a typical CU change, 8/10 circuits and assuming only a few remedial works, fully tested and all certificates - using a decent quality brand, not some cheap Chinese tat. Will be more if there are lots of remedial works and main gas/water bonds & meter tails to upgrade (as is often the case).0 -
As above, £350+, including materials, did he say what caused the original failure, that may need sorting too0
