Do I need to claim my tax back

Options
I'm a student and did a little work for an agency over easter. Some before and some after April 1st (which complicates things a little) and because I was working April-September of the previous year its possible I earned more than £6k (or whatever it is) during the last tax year.

I paid tax for all the work I did for the agency.

Over this summer I'm working for another employer. On the first pay slip I was taxed even though I filled out a P46. I now have my P45 from the agency but it has the tax code, BR. So even if I give this to my new employer I will still have to pay tax.

Am I right in thinking I should get my employer to fill out and send the P38, in order for me to no longer be taxed?

Will the tax owed to me be automatically reimbursed or do I need to fill out a P60 for that?

I might have all the answers here. But I'd just like to know for sure.

Thanks!

You probably paid too much in tax while you were working for the agency. If you earned over £6,475 income tax at 20% would only be payable on the amount over £6,475. Ring your local tax office, I've always found them helpful. There are several ways of getting a tax refund, they'll give you the best option.

yes do the P38(s) thing to avoid having tax deducted in future - http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kbroker/hmrc/forms/viewform.jsp?formId=758

For reclaiming tax the options are here:

Claim it back. You should only be taxed on the earnings OVER the personal allowance. Getting it back is really easy :) It can take a month or two if you claim right after you finish the work but if you're claiming from a previous tax year the cheque comes through the door in a week in my experience.
