Advice Re Car Insurance needed urgently please
Hiya
I have come across a slight problem in relation to my car insurance and wondered if anyone can offer me any advice please
I have a dispute with my current provider as they allege I have missed one months insurance payment but when I have asked them where they said they would investigate and get back to me but instead have sent me a letter stating that my policy is being cancelled as of 21/7/2010 so I called them up to ask why as they hadn't got back to me with a date and they said nothing they could do.
I went to their office with copies of my bank statements to prove I have never missed a payment as it is done by direct debit except for last months which was paid by debit card due to bank error and they said the computer would not let them cancel their cancellation and unfortunately their search to find this "missing" payment has gone missing as well (thought I was in a comedy when he said that cos its a joke)
Anyway I have been online looking for other insurance companies and calling around am getting rejected by a lot of them either cos I have a medical condition (DVLA - No Restrictions) or cos my BF was banned 3 years ago for 12 months for totting up points (1 company actually said as I am main driver it does not look good that I have a medical condition, wanted to reach through phone and slap him).
Should I just declare the car as SORN as my BF's mate can put it up his path as it needs a little bit of work doing to it which he can do and in the process save some money as not paying out for insurance or does anyone know of any decent car insurers who don't mind either of the above?
Can't understand the problem to be honest as all this was full declared to present insurer with no issues
Thank you

You refer to this as a "slight" problem, but a cancelled policy is a major problem with long term implications.
Try to get this cancellation reversed. If it stands you will have to declare this cancellation to future insurers (they all ask if you have ever had a policy cancelled) along with your other declarations. Many just say "no" if you have had a policy cancelled.0 -
Having a policy cancelled doesnt go down well, You can probably shop around but they may want payment in full.
When you say up his path as off road, Is it actually private land away from the road?
Several people have parked off road on grass verge outside their house but thats still classed as the highway.
You dont want a fine for untaxed & uninsured vehicle next.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
When I say up his path I mean in his driveway
I have been to current provider for second time today and said that while they are trying to find out were this missing payment is from (I have asked them to do another search seen as recent one has gone missing) I am willing to give them the money from the missing month so that I am completely up to date with insurance then when they realise their mistake they can knock it off a future payment.
Was told "theres nothing we can do as its all down to the computer now to make all the decisions and as your policy is cancelled as of next wednesday it is too short notice for us to do anything else"
Thing is, is that I only got letter on Thursday and have been in regular contact with them since so surely they could have tried to do something then?0 -
For the reasons already posted, keep on at them to reinstate your policy. Ask to speak to a manager regarding this and keep escalating till you get to the person who can sort this for you.0

Sounds a truly shambolic insurance company you have there. Swiftcover by any chance? You do need to keep on at them. In writing really; they can't be trusted to 'remember' phone conversations. Threaten to pursue a complaint with the Financial Ombudsman - might make them get their act together.0

It was the manager I have been dealing with, hes about much use a a chocolate teapot0

I can sort this for you for nothing but Quentin would accuse me of touting for business.
We have seen you on here openly tout for business. You have claimed you are a barrister who specialises in motor insurance and consumer work mostly on on the claimant side but that you work as a corporate lawyer "so I neither have nor need a practice licence. I head a department of around 25 people which comprises solicitors, accident investigators, loss adjusters and chartered insurers." (Seems full blown spam!)
Now that it has been pointed out that it is against MSE rules to tout for business you are offering to "sort" this for "nothing".
As businesses are not allowed to offer deals like this (however honourable the intention), it just seems more cynical rulebreaking. (And where do we stand should your free professional "sorting" turn out to be bad)
You are breaking some MSE rules over your activities:If you are discussing a field in which you work, make sure you don't tout for business, or mention or refer to your company name/website in any way
And now wanting us to "use" you to sort legal problems seems you are wanting us to get in touch with you (again in breach of the rules):The safety of our forum users is paramount and for this reason we can't allow anyone to exchange their personal details either on the open forum or via PM, however honourable the intention0 -
I don't want anyone to be arguing over my issue so I thought I had better let you know asap that insurance company have just called me to say they have "found" my missing month (apparently it had been input twice under one month and not picked up on when checking) they are going to call me back on Monday to advise me of what they are going to do as they still say its a computer decision
Heres hoping its good news0 -
Good news. Ask them to confirm this error of theirs in writing, bearing in mind they have put the cancellation to you in writing.0

Will do Quentin but am not holding out much hope cos I went down there before lunch (12pm) today after they called and asked the manager if there was any way of speeding up their decison so I am not worrying all weekend but he said "I have advised you that its a computer decision not a human one" I then said "but isn't it a human inputting it onto the computer?" (should have kept my mouth shut)
Anyway I have started inputting my details for quotes should the worst come to the worst but have been advised to go on the convicted insurers sites (not for me but for my OH who is my additional driver as he was banned for 12 months back in 2007) so am ging to see what that throws up
Once again thank you very much for your help0
