Dell Inspiron 1525 remaster

A friend of mine has a Dell Inspiron 1525, which, he told me, has stopped functioning after visiting some dodgy site. I seem to remember, from my old desktop, that when all else fails, one can frestore the computer back to factory settings.
How can this be done on a laptop?

This all the details I have. Unfortunately I am housebound, following a serious road traffic accident, he's in London, and I am in Hastings. He will come and see me in august, bring his laptop and I will sort it for him.0

If you do a factory reset all his files will be overwritten , unless he has everything backed up of course!0

He has no important files, he just use it for internet, emails and social networking. Will the steps above work the same for windows XP?0

Either F8 it or upgrade the laptop to w7 or linux.0
