Why cannot it ever be simple with Barclays!!

Hello all,
Why cannot it ever be simple with Barclays!!
Back in late 2008 I had an issue with Barclays where they closed my overdraft without notice - they accepted this, and were sending letters telling me they were going to close my account to the wrong address - luckily I had proof of the letter conforming the change- and after first of all saying that it was because the signatures didnt match!! they accepted they were wrong
It ended up with Barclays issuing a default against me and I went through the complaint procedure with them at which was resolved with a letter from Barclays apologising for the mistakes there end but saying they couldnt reinstate the closed account but once it was cleared the default would be removed from my credit file
Step forward to June and after paying £50 per month I paid one lump sum of £1300 to clear the overdraft, I did this on the basis that the default would be removed from my file like stated in the letter
I then rung Barlclays to request another copy of the letter - as I only had a photocopied one left and recieved this.
I then proceeded to write a letter stating that my O/D was now paid and therefore can they remove the default from my file. They wrote back to say they couldnt find any record of my complaint ( despite them sending me out the letter the week before ) and then I had to ring them once again to show them where it was
Eventually come today I have recieved a letter from them stating
"I understand you were issued a letter on 1 May 2008 and advised once the default was repaid, the default would be removed
Firsttly, please accept my sincere apologies for any trouble or inconvienience this matter may have caused you. Given the surrounding circumstances, your complaint has been upheld
I am sorry the information given in this letter is incorrect, as a defualt must remain on the credit file for six years. Barclays has a legal obligation to provide correct and accurate information to credit reference agencies and as the default is factual it cannot be removed"
Can somebody please advice me as to my next step, surely if they have put to me in writing that it would be removed once it was cleared then they cannot just say no to it now
Im really dissapointed in the bank as my whole process with them has been a nightmare

That doesn't say that they will remove the default, only that they wouldn't (couldn't) until the debt is repaid. They are under no obligation to do so, and possibly under legal obligation to report accurately.0 -
Although I understand what you are saying surely if they have admitted I did not know that my account was going to be closed and also ask me to contact them once it has been cleared so a request can be actioned then you would expect them to put a request in
At the end of the day if I had known that they were not going to then I would have continued paying £50 per month rather than paying the total off so I could clear itJuly 2015 Wins- Shaun The Sheep Goody Bag, 4x Books
