Too late for onion sets?

I've got some onion sets which I didn't get time to plant at the right time. Would I be wasting my time planting them now? I'm only doing plants in containers as my garden appears to have been 'built' on top of tarmac, so I've only got about 6 inches of soil before I have to get the pick axe out.
If it's too late for this year, can I keep them til next or will they spoil? I don't want to waste them really, but I don't have the time to waste either.
Many thanks

Waste of time & effort IMO as you state you do not have time to waste
They will not keep until next year
Only option is plant and use as leaves as chive / onion flavouring
Personally I would put it down to experience and put them on the compost heapWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -
Dont onion sets keep then?
I planted onions back in late March but dont have room for using the full lot of sets I got from Wilkos0 -
No point with them, they are so cheap to buy, why bother?Kind Regards

No they don't. By the time next March comes along they will be hollow and dry.
It will soon be time for overwintering onions.
In future, if you haven't got enough space - put them all in a seed tray as soon as you get them; plant the first ones to sprout into their final positions and pop the remaining ones anywhere you have a little space; or leave them in the seed tray and use as spring onions when they get a little bigger.0 -
I planted some a week or so back, Sprouting already.
I reckon they will grow a bit, You have them so try them.
If summer lasts they will get a decent size if not you should get some for
