New poster: Howdens question [sorry!]

Halo

My partner has previously posted on this site and suggested I post this question.

Apologies upfront as I know there are tons of posts about this. I have read as many as possible but can't seem to find the answer to my question.

We [my partner and I] have just bought our 1st home after saving for 15 years. It is a completely run down 2 bed flat. We sourced all our workmen [carpenters, electricians, tilers, bathroom fitters, carpet fitters, builders] from mybuilder.com. However, 6 months on, we are now close to losing the will to live due to the amount of dodgy workmanship, unreliability and excessive costs incurred so far renovating the bedroom, living room, bathroom, windows and doors.

We are now at the kitchen stage where we need to totally rebuild it ie redo the ceiling, plumbing, electrics, floor as well as buy brand new appliances and cabinets. We really cannot afford to be ripped off again and have decided to forget about doing the 2nd bedroom and use all our leftover money just for a really good decent well-done kitchen. However we are quite out of our depth [as im sure youve gathered] as we both lived at home before this.

From advice on this site, we want to go with Howdens. We have no idea how to go about this. We have read on this website and on howdens website that they only deal with 'trade' - but there is no information on how to find a trader that deals with them. We are new to the area and dont know anyone to ask for recommendations. We have tried various forums but still dont know who to go to if we want the job done to a high standard. How do we know that a trader from mybuilder.com who claims to have a howden account is not [another] cowboy pretending to have a howden account? How do we get to see Howden products when their website only accepts trade inquiries? How does one find a reputable kitchen fitter with a howdens account?

TIA to any replies :)

  • Take a trip down to your nearest howdens, you will be able to see most of the range on show, and ask them to recommend a couple of fitters.

For "trade only" outlets like this, just tell them you are self building and considering ordering [everything] from them. You will get the account and a good trade discount too. Then just buy the things you want
