Dad in need of nursing home care but we got no money!

Our 89 year old father has dementia, parkinson's and numerous other illnesses that mean he requires full time care. He is currently in the hospital and we have been told to start looking for a nursing home for him.

He lives in a Council house with his wife, they have no savings or any assets to speak of. We have been told that he is entitled to benefits of £580'ish a month towards the costs of care with the average nursing home fees being £500 per week!!! We have been told that we will need to find the balance.

Needless to say that we, like most others I guess, are generally skint and can barely afford to keep our heads above water with our own families let alone find an extra £1500 a month.

What should we do?

I have 2 elderly relatives in nursing homes. Their bank accounts, assets, etc were looked into and then they said that there would not be any top-up element and that their nursing home costs would be paid for by the state. they had some savings, so i would have thought in your case there would be nothing to pay?

    Hi

You really would better post on the over 50's forum http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=26ing

There are some folk with a lot of experience re continuing care which may apply.

And you are not required to pay the rest who told you that.? They need to do a full assessment of his needs and finances. Most nursing homes have some palces for LA clients and some private. He neds a LA one.

Whatever you do, do not pay anything. One or two councils have a sneaky way of geting families toimhelp out in the first instance and then refuse to pick up the tab when money runs out.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Thank you CL and RAS. I've posted another thread in the over 50's forum. Thanks again. :)

Contact the Relatives and Residents Association

    http://www.relres.org

They are a brilliant organisation that offer advice and support to those in care and their relatives and will be able to advise you what help your father is entitled to. I was under the impression that you don't have to pay for nursing care, only social care and with your father's illnesses I would have thought all his care home fees would be met by the LA /NHS. However if they can wiggle out of paying and get you to, they will. HTH
