Ideas? Short break in Amsterdam - with an 8 year old?

We are thinking of going to Amsterdam for a few days in October. We've both been a few times before so know the place quite well, however, this time it will be a different kind of visit as we are thinking of taking my 9 year old daughter!

I would like some ideas of what to do with an 9 year old and also ideas of where to look for family room/suites that are VERY cheap! as we are pretty skint at the moment.

We are going for 3 night in Mid October (half term week).

Any links or general ideas would be most welcome :)

Thanks

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Hi we went in Feb a year ago and they had several ice rincs at that time of year which my 8 year daughter loved! She also enjoyed the van gough museam, (but not for very long!) The beer experience she enjoyed the really tacky horse ride and all the virual reality stuff. Not so keen on the Ann Frank House which I thought was brilliant but that may be due to the fact it so busy. Theres also Madam Tussards but we gave that a miss so I can't comment.
She hated the canal ride as it was slow and in her words "boring" Have a great time I was surprised how kid friendly the place was. We stayed at the Hotel Nova which is just of Dam Square good size rooms and as the Dutch charge by room not people was good value for the 4 of us.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more
