Continuing from this thread which I accidently posted in the wrong forum.
Reading on the SoGA page on the MSE site, as the laptop died 18 months after purchase, it would be up to me to prove that its an inherant fault that caused it to die, rather than misuse? I've found a couple of forum posts with people having similar issues, but would I need something much larger in scale? I'm thinking that its probably the case that he's just going to need to buy a new laptop?

Under SOGA, within the first 6 months the fault is assumed to be inherent and it is up to the retailer to prove otherwise. After 6 months, that changes and the onus is on the consumer to prove the fault is inherent and not simply misuse or wear and tear.
You can prove it was inherent by commissioning a independent report. If found to be inherent, you would be able to claim this back but if it is found not to be inherent, you would be responsible for those costs. You keep using that word. Forum posts (ie. other users experience) is a useful start, but yes really you need an independent report which you will have to pay for (but will get the money back if you win/it's found to be an inherent fault). Thus, it's a bit of a gamble, since it may not side your way. Hence, why extended warranties exist really; they're not just for the gullible.0
