How to transfer files?

Just bought a netbook and was hoping to transfer everything from old PC onto it! (both running XP )
Spent most of yesterday trying, but no joy.
Tried the transfer wizard onto a disk then onto netbook but didn't let me do it, same with trying a flash drive. Asked in local pooter shop about transferring data with a cable to connect both, but after much head scratching he told me it was 'complicated', but didn't have a cable anyway!
Looking for a solution, i remembered the MSE forum dwellers !
Anyone point me in the right direction?? Thanks

In what way would it not let you do it? What error message did you get?

There are numerous ways to do it (Laplink cable, LAN crossover cable, etc) but sticking the files on a USB pendrive should be easiest.
  • Thanks for the reply,
I can download everything to a DAT.file in the new netbook, but i can't open the file as it needs to know the programme what created it!
I know there's probably a simple solution, but as a computer numpty, i'm stuck!

Don't you run the Transfer Wizard on one PC to create it, copy it across and then use the Transfer Wizard on the other to unpack it and put the files in the right place?

(Confession: I'm guessing - I've never actually used it!)

    Buy USB stick.

Copy files directly to USB stick from old machine.

Take USB stick out of old machine, put into new

Copy or Cut the files from the stick, and Paste into where you want them.
