Netgear SC101? Comments?

Has anyone got any comments or experience of a Nethear SC101 NAS network storage device?

There are a couple of issues with the unit which I wasnt aware of in any literature or their website.

(a) the formatting of any hard drive inserted is unique to the SC101 device, meaning you cannot swap hard drives between a PC/External Hard Drive and the SC101

(b) having to install the driver software of each machine that will access the SC101, but what about instances where I have multiple NAS on different networks (i.e. at home and at work) with the same laptop?

  • Also, don't install any drives that may get hot as the SC101 passive cools only. So that effectively limits you to <250Gb per bay.

  • I was looking at two Western Digital 320gb Mirrored

  • are there any other portable mirroring devices available that are cost effective or easier to use?

  • I bought the damn thing now and wished I hadn't.

Installation isnt simple, straight forward as Im used to from Netgear.

Plus its crippled by poor support.

As mentioned above, anyone recommend another solution?

Im looking for a storage device which supports Mirroring.

Scan sell some boxes which do a similar thing (more features) but are significantly more expensive - £210:

  • Tom's Harware has a review of the SC101 that seems to give it a good review. If you read through the review, it tells you why you need to install software to get it working.

However, to your question, are you after additional storage space? a backup solution? a SME disk storage server? What is it about mirroring that you want?

Have a look for NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices and you'll see there are loads out there. The Bufallo Linkstations get good reviews, but if all you are after is backup of a local pc, perhaps something like the Maxtor One Touch external hard drives would suffice?
