How can I tell if con artist agent's account is personal or business?

My understanding is that it's fairly easy for a company director to dissolve a limited company and fairly difficult for creditors to enforce any kind of judgement. I know that some creditors, such as the HMRC or administrators appointed by creditors, contact Companies House to stop a company from voluntarily striking themselves off and even reverse the status of dissolved companies so they can put them into administration and attempt to settle the debts.

It looks like the laws that make entrepreneurship easy, ones which encourage someone to start up again when they've had an honest business failure, protect those who serially dissolve companies without paying their creditors or any taxes, and then start up the same business again under a new name at virtually no cost to themselves. In fact, as the lettings business is unregulated, its easy for cowboys to start up, take all the rents and deposits, bail out and then open up - some agents are notorious for this type of sharp business practice.

Look at the company details on the Companies House website and download the reports there for a couple of quid each (see the webcheck service). Find a company information website and enter the company directors name. Chances are they have a history of dissolving companies, changing the company name and starting new ones.

I have several Barclays business accounts the sort code is 20-38-83.

The accounts are not 'held' at any particular branch I can pay in and draw out from any branch I choose, providing of course the security protocols are met on withdrawals. (they are multi signature accounts).

A shot in the dark but I reckon 20 suggests Barclay's (My Nat West accounts start with a 60) 38 could indicate which type of account (Barclay's have a myriad of different accounts) and the 83 a data centre?
Could it be that the middle figure differentiates whether business of personal?

    Maybe some banksters could clarify?
  • Last week, I spoke to Companies House providing them with a solicitor's letter of intent to take legal action to recover the money. Yesterday, Companies House agreed to prevent the agent's company from dissolving during any court case. But will keeping the company 'active' on CH's books make much difference to me given that the company is no long trading in real life?
  • Pity I didn't discover this site earlier! I'm having a similar problem with this same agent. Please check your email & send me a response? Thanks.

Come off it. OP has not mentioned the Agent by name.

    Er...actually, I think you'll find they have.

And the game is called "Let's try getting our money back from con artists masquerading as agents..."
