decking in winter?

Laid some decking in the summer which I have to say looks really nice!Thing is do I need to cover it up in winter to save it getting algae all ovr it? I know I can get it off with a stiff broom in the spring but should I cover it with something as its really not going to be used.

When we had our decking done, I used to think how lovely and clean it was until winter arrived and muddy foot prints and dog paw prints were over it and it's hard work cleaning it all the time. The novelty does wear off when it's bitterly cold outside :p perhaps a varnish would help protect it as I think covering it will cause my harm than good and I doubt it would be practical?

Alternatively just leave it during the winter then jetwash it in the spring. This is what I used to do. Comes up fine.

Just be careful during the winter months, any icy or wet weather does make it slippery.

Decking Seal is available from most DIY sheds that will keep algae off. Alternatively use a stiff brush and dilute solution of bleach on it in spring - works a treat.

we already put something on it but I believe that was more a stain type thing than an algea inhibitor
  • Got deckin round outside of pond. Not too bad when wet but it's really slippery when it has been icy / frosty. To clean I just use water and elbow grease - soon gets all the mess off.
