Need To Upgrade My Old Computer

Hi I need to upgrade my old computer as its running abit slow but dont know exactly which components to add. These are my computer specs...

Model Name: AWRDACPI | Motherboard Model: MS-6719 | Maximum Memory: 2 GB | Total Slots: 2 (Currently Memory in 2 Slots) | Memory Size: 256 MB,256 MB, | Memory Speeds: MHz, MHz, | Processor Speed: 2788 | Manufacturer: MEDIONPC

So I will upgrade my RAM to 1gb each which I understand. I guess a DDR ram will be okay. Does it matter which Mhz i get as my current one is 133 Mhz.??????

However im confused because I want to add more hard drive memory. Would a SATA Drive fit into my computer??? how would i know what is suitable???

Would I need anything else for my computer? I only use it for surfing the net.

Thanks

  • You'll need to get compatible memory, check on the Crucial website which tells you what memory you can use (for most machines).
As for hard drive, why not just get an external HDD, easiest by far. many cheap options out there at the moment

Problem is it is OLD, and a Medion as well. Brand names are everything in PC terms. Memory that old is not made any more, I would think. S/H is ok though. The old hard drive is probably an old IDE / parallel interface, and they to are not made any more either, can you see where this is going ? Being a Medion brand there may not be any spare locations for internal drives. The power supply is old as well.....
Want a new PC ? ? ? Buy PC's fully loaded as parts are not around long enough.
  • that said, the memory sticks in situ should have a label on em detailing the type of memory, and you should be able to get such off ebay.

I would go the ebay route as well for memory. Looks to take DDR-333, which will be much cheaper secondhand.

For surfing only use I would not go over 2x512MB of memory either, assuming you're not running Vista (doubt it on a 6 year old PC).

    Hi
If you want to fit a SATA hard drive you need to make sure that there is a SATA connector on the motherboard.
Here are pictures of SATA connectors:-

I did try using the crucial website but couldnt recognise the computer however I did use a website called memorystock.com and it came back with the following:

1Gb 1024mb DDR 333Mhz PC2700 184p DIMM Sync CL=2.5 Memory upgrade (Does this seem okay)????????

May be i will go for the 512mb on each slot from ebay as i only use it for browsing. No i dont run VISTA as again its a 6 year old computer.

As for the hard drive, I have an external one but I thought if I upgrade this then the computer might just be tweaked abit better. It most likely want be able to hold a SATA drive as its a 5-6 year old computer but will have a look inside.

I will be buying a laptop for around £400 in the next few months but my dad can use the desktop and I will use it as a backup.

    Thanks for the quick replies.......

Hmmm personally I would be tempted to just upgrade the whole PC as it's not very future proof!

For £280.01 (why .01 I'll never know) you can get

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/186617

Better processor, more memory and better memory (DDR3!), new OS and bigger hard drive of course for not a lot of cash :D
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

Yes, you want non-ECC. ECC is for servers, more expensive and may not run in standard PCs.

Download and Run: CPU-Z. This will let you know what is already inside the PC.

You can also enter the Serial number of your PC here for info about your machine.

Possible upgrades will be for more RAM and a Graphics Card. But more RAM(at least 1GB in total) should be enough.
