How can you check wireless router?

Tried to log on to the net this morning at home but couldn't. Have been having a few problems lately and my provider madasafish claim there isn't a problem.

I have a Netgear DG834 but when I check my wireless network it says Connected with an excellent signal strength.

Anyway i can check what is causing the problem, router or iSP?

Thanks

  • I take it you have rebooted the router? Do you know the username/password to get into the router setup screen?

    Yep rebooted Steve.

I'm pretty sure I have the password etc but am in work now so can't check.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks

P.S. It doesn't happen frequently but it's a pain when it does. Couldn't connect one Friday night all night. Contacted ISP the next day and they said they didn't have any problems.

also the next day I went into the left to get my old wired modem/router to test that but the internet was back on so I couldn't complete the test. Didn't have time to do this morning.
  • you need to check if it is your laptop losing connection to the router or the router losing connection to the internet.

Does ping -t 192.168.0.1 work when it fails? If it does, then the issue is either filters/isp/BT. If it doesn't then it is probably a wireless, interference or encryption issue, try changing channels/upgrade router firmware/make sure it is secure.

jsut to say ive got that router and its given us problems, already exchanged it once after a few months. It seems rebooting helps, as in switching the modem off, leave for ten secs, then switch on...

disconnect the router from the phone line/wall connection
power off the router, reconnect, then power on the router
    then boot up your laptop/pc
if that doesnt work, do you have a modem directly connected into the wall.... and then into the router... or does you router do both jobs.... if so can you revert back to the original modem?
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

My parents have exactly the same problem and same solution - but it IS a total nuisance!
