What is the best lawnmower for my garden?

Hello

I'm a fairly amateur gardener and have got my own terraced house which has a nice little back yard and a 75ft long front garden - yikes!

I've used my mums lawnmower for the first cut, it was hard work - took 10 collection boxes to get it done and the ground is quite uneven in places with a rockery area which was awkward to manouvere around.

So now I've got to buy my own mower - googled for advice and there is just far too much advice and now even more confused.

I don't mind electric as my extension cable will stretch right to the front but I want one that is easy to use and gives a good result.

At the moment the grass is very coarse with lots of weeds but I've enlisted the help of a garden care company who will treat the weeds every quarter.

I'm also on a budget, so ideally not too expensive. Dont want to spend over £100.
Thanks

I personally would go for a petrol one. Since moving over to petrol power, I hope I never have to go back to electric.

My next mower will be a petrol job. But it will cost a lot more than £100

If you'd consider a second-hand mower, you might be able to pick up a Hayter Envoy for less than £100. It'll cope well with uneven ground and long grass.

Are you anywhere near Mansfield? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electric-Lawnmower-Hayter-Envoy-36-/170512634970?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Home_Garden_GardenPowerTools_CA&hash=item27b358545a
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

I have two lawnmowers - so here's a word of caution.

I have a sooper-dooper fabulous petrol driven Mountfield. It's about 20 years old and thoroughly reliable and efficient - a good investment. The only problem is that you have to be strong enough (and learn the knack) to pull the engine cord and get it started. It's no problem at all when someone can pull the cord for me - but that's not the point, is it? :o

So it sits in the shed for most of the year.

My back-up is an electric Bosch . Plug it into the extension lead and away I go Va-va-Voom!

B&Q (https://www.diy.com) have a 20% off garden items from today until Monday. This includes lawnmowers.

I have just ordered a petrol one for £79.98 from B&Q. This is a push type. (It has got good reviews on it, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!).

You can also get the next model up (self propelled) for £103.98.

My last 2 lawnmowers were Flymo and I wouldn't get them anymore. The last one only lasted 3 years and they failed to collect all the grass in the boxes.

Failing that, thought about a goat?:D

Our petrol mower died last week and I wasn't sorry, I had to wait for my husband to start it for me every time (being a little 'un) myself.

We decided lightweight was the way forward and even though I wasn't keen on electric, after reading very positive reviews eventually decided on Bosch Rotak 40 - £124 on Amazon, they also do smaller blades for under £100.

Really pleased with the lawn mower, it gives as good a cut as the petrol, is lightweight and I can easily get it in and out of the shed myself and providing you work away from the electric source the cable is really not a problem.

  • I have a Bosch Lawnmower too, its on the expensive side but never fails me :) best to have a look round before you buy so you know you are getting best deals and one right for your garden...and dont forget to buy a secure ground anchor or a lock to keep it secure - last thing you need is it to go missing a week after you bought it! ;-/
