Car Drive under Trees - Ideas?

Hi All,

So if you read my post about screwing up my car trying to get crap off it, you'll understand how this post came about ;)

Either way, my very long wide drive is COVERED by trees. Unfortunately, when I wake up in the morning you can not see my car beneath thousands of little brown leaf type things... (not leaves, but very small kind of things... hard to explain and I'm not agricultural expert! :p ).

I tried buying a cover for the car and putting it on every night but it's becoming very impractical. I'm covering myself in dirt and water every time I put it on/take it off, especially with the rainy/stormy weather right now!

The drive is quite big, and it's rented accomodation. The whole drive belongs to me. I already have the cover... Any ideas of a way to create some sort of tent with the cover that would withstand mildly stormy conditions or something similar?

Random I know but I'm running out of ideas :)

EDIT: Not sure if this should be in the DIY section... maybe applicable to both.

I use a fabric canopy gazebo from argos when I need to keep my car covered. It's square, got 4 legs and is stablised by rope and tent pegs. As long as you can secure it, it works fine unless you have a hurricane or typhoon rip thru the street. Don't think it would stay up forever, but it was only £20 or thereabouts.
  • Hmm looked for car tents but everythings £150+ :(

Get rid of the tree's before they ruin the drive way and the roots make their way into the foundations of the house/buildings.

same at my house,i think you will find they are lime trees, and its the pods that are coming off at the moment, normally its a horrible stick residue, and then when the leaves fall off there is nothing to stop the bird poo,i have 5 round my house and all have tree preservation orders on them,

^^ If they should mysteriously start to die off through some mystery soil bacteria, you can get rid of them then with no hassle.

But exercise caution, because the symptoms of a mysterious bacterial infection are exactly the same as hammering a copper nail into the roots or drilling a hole in the base and filling it with diesel fuel!!

My step father had the same issue with the tree's in his back garden.... After one fell onto the house during a storm (causing £50'000+ of damage), he queried regarding getting rid of the remaining tree's, but he was not allowed to!!
Unfortunately they all became afflicted by this mysterious bacterial infection and had to be removed 2 years later....

  • LOL Strider.. Brilliant. I'm sure some MSE'ers will reply and tell you off, but either way, it gave me a good giggle!

The trees are at the other side of the wall and are VERY high up and everywhere.. it's rented accomodation too which makes it worse as even if it was on the property I wouldn't be able to do anything...

I dont think removing the trees is an option really :p I like the idea of a tent but not the idea of spending more than a few bob :p The cover cost me £30 and seems to have been a waste! Way too inconvenient.

The one I use is a garden thing. It's not the sturdiest canopy, but it's about 3m x 3mand gives enough cover for one car. I'll see if I can find a product code.

Tesco had their 1.3m X 1.3m Gazibos half price at £7 last week. Set 2 of those up and secure them with a few ropes, should be good for a few months of use, all for £14.
