Do not be SCARED into paying for virus solutions - Ignore calls from Comantra

Options
Hi All,

Just a note, 3 people I know have received calls in the past 24 hours from:
http://www.comantra.net/

The calls have said, "we have detected you have a virus and as a microsoft gold partner we offer a solution to remotely fix your machine" bla bla bla...

Absolutely disgraceful, and possibly illegal! Reported to trading standards but just as a note to all MSE'ers, ignore any scare marketing! Ignore any popups that says you have a virus unless its from the virus protection you installed, and ignore any calls such as the above!

Makes my blood boil..! The amount of people they would have scammed from this....

Me too...... Saying that my friend is similar to me and the girl that rung him got quite an ear full I think...!

He played her for a little bit saying "Interesting,... tell me more".. She went on to say how "We can access computers without the owners permission to resolve it if its your parents computer... If you just go to a URL I give you I'll be able to go in and show you".

My friend replied with "Don't worry, I know how to solve my own virus issues" to which she replied "Well, most people think that but don't. Open up access to me and I'll show you".

    Crazy.

I'd love to give them access to a windows (or Linux) installation in a VM and just see what they do with it. If they trash it, then it's no big deal as it would just reimage it after seeing what changes were made (if any).

    Oooo, now theres' a challenge!

Anyone up for creating a "test" VM machine and recording it with fraps/growler guncam and see what these experts do :D

Any theories on whether they have a list of likely phone numbers, or whether they're random-dialling?

I've been called. They try to get you do download an executable. Whne I challenged him, he told me it was all ok, he was professional. I told him I didn't want him to have access to my machine, professional or not. He started screaming at me that it was for my own good, he had my "port number" (!?!?) and he was scanning right now!

    Then he hung up.

Indian tech support just gets worse and worse.
I reported him to his ISP.
  • LOL wireframe..

I really want them to call me!

I say, spin up a VM and install a script that displays the incoming IP and says "BACKTRACE HACK ACTIVATED.. BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS DOWNLOADED...".... Would be quite amusing.

I'd like to know what programs these "infected" machines have in common, if they're not randomly being dialled, this company is obviously running a scan for a cerain program to find out people to call.

I like the idea of a VM, I'd be interested in doing it if I could find out what they use lol
