Question about road tax and HRM

Hi all

I hope someone can help. My road tax is due on the 01st August 2010. I have HRM and a Disabled Exemption Certificate, however, I am getting a Motability car on the 1st October. Can I still get free road tax now for the car I am driving?

What do I do when I sell my existing car? Do I have to surrender the tax disc or can I sell it with the remaining 4 months tax on the car?

Cheers

Yes you can, as the tax disc is for everyone eligable, and is not just for motabilty. But when you come to sell your car, the tax disc will be null and void; not sure if you have to send it back or not.
It has the word 'disabled' written all across the front of the disc, so it doesn 't look, on closer inspection quite the same as a normal one.

It is exactly the same as everyone elses tax disc except for the tiny rectangle where the post office cashier writes in the amount for the period 6/12 months, instead of saying for eg £65.50 it will say disabled, not emblazoned over the disc as your post suggests.

You MUST not sell the car with your disabled tax disc on it. The car becomes taxed as a 'disabled' class vehicle, and that tax classification is relevant only to the vehicle while it is owned by a person in receipt of HRM.

When you sell the vehicle, you send the tax disc back to DVLA. The person who buys the car must take the registration document to the post office where they tax the vehicle, and change the taxation class back to PLG (unless they also have HRM and an exemption certificate, then of course they use that to get a new tax disc).
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
  • I have just collected a new motability scheme car (lease) and was worried about exemption certs etc. As it turned out Motability do not need to use your exemption certificate as they manage to zero rate cars on their lease scheme through another arrangement with the DVLA.

The disabled tax on my old car (which I own) runs out at the end of this month. Then I will have to either go or post its registration to a DVLA office to have its tax class changed before I sell it ( you cannot do this at the Post Office). I assume that you could continue to use your old car as long as you kept within the rules for disabled exemption (if you needed or could afford two cars!). In effect your certificate applied to the car you own while the motability lease car is exempt through the motability charity. This may be a load of 'assumptions' but my car won't be on the road until I change its tax next month anyway!!
