Dead laptop Mobo

My cousin's had his Toshiba Satellite L300D die recently, the mobo's dead (Lots of poking about with multimeter's confirms, the power's getting to the mobo). But its only a year and a half old, but the warranty is just a year. However, you don't expect a laptop to die after such a small period of time.

I've read several times about situations like this, but I can't actually remember the actual advice given. I believe the laptop was bought from a high street retailer, but my Aunt probably won't have the receipt for this so... where does he stand on this? I seem to remember that since its out of warranty, its up to us to prove that there's an inherant fault with the laptop, rather than the manufacturer to prove that its not? Or something like that? I'm not sure!
