I'm trying to set up an ethernet connection on an Imac running OS 10.6 with a Netgear DG834G.

I've got it set up and running fine in wireless but can't get a wired connection.

In system preferences I get a message saying the ethernet cable is unplugged. I've taken the cables out and put them back in. I've rebooted both the router and the Imac but this hasn't helped.

Any help gratefuly received!

Are you using the right cable, i.e you're not trying to use a crossover cable?

Can you plug the same cable into another computer laptop, to see if it works, to discount the cable and the router port?

I've plugged the ethernet cable into a Windows laptop and sucessfully created a new working internet connection.

What does it show under Network in System Preferences?

If it was a crossover cable, the Mac would've worked it out anyway. If we've established that that exact port at the back of your router is fine (should be 4) and that the cable is fine, then I can only guess that there's something wrong with the LAN port on the Mac?
Diable - OP states in original post that it says 'network cable unplugged' and this is what it'll say in the network tab in System Preferences.
  • have you ever been able to get a wired connection? may be a hardware problem with the port on the mac...
    Friendly greeting!

It's a new machine and modem. I've had both two months.

I've only ever used a wireless connection. The only thing I've done differently is to change the ethernet cable from the supplied Netgear one to a longer one from Amazon.

Top of the screen, click on the fan shape, turn airport off and "join other network" select ethernet.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I'm still having problems. I tried knightstyles advice. I don't get the same menu options but somehow got an ethernet connection working.

I tried to test what I had done by restarting the iMac and router and trying again...but I can't get the ethernet connection working again.

When I click on the fan icon....
If I click Turn Airport off I then only get the options to turn Airport back on or to go to Network Preferences. I don't get an option to join another Network.

Tonight I have been trying again to get it sorted. What I did see was that when I powered up the router and then the iMac..an Ethernet connection was immediately established. I could see the number of the ethernet port on the Router illuminated (doesn't normally show).
I managed to load one page and then the connection was lost and I haven't been able to make it again.

Same issue again this morning. I managed to get a working ethernet connection when I turned router and Mac on. It worked for a few minutes and then dropped. It reverted to the cable unplugged message.

I managed to write down the info from System Preferences when it was working. This was IP, Subnet,Router and DNS. Is there a way of manually entering this in and would this potentially solve the problem?

    Thanks
