Ferry to Ireland, do I need a passport?

My passport has run out and we are going to Southern Ireland in September.
Do I need a passport to go there on the ferry?

No, but it is advisable to take some form of photo id, such as driving licence etc. If P&O or Stena, there is usually some info on their website regarding what you may be asked for at the port.

Agree with Westie, i've been & didn't need a passport but was advised to take photo id, whether it was a driving licence or passport or other, enjoy it it's wonderful there!

Mine wasn't checked when I went over to Ireland in January, but I had it with me as you never know. When I go October I am taking mine with me as I read that you should take something.

Driving Licence is fine, as long as it states a UK place of birth. If you were born abroad it "could" create immigration issues.

  • by law you only need an acceptable photo id because of agreements between the two countries - but recent security has meant that yes you will need a passport, and it might cause you a lot of hassel by not providing one

there might be exceptions to this, but unless you call them in advance, and you have a suitable alternatve (if there are any), you might cause youself problems

You have plenty of time to renew, I wouldn't leave it till the last minute to find out if you need to

In more than 20 years of driving to ROI (maybe 4 or 5 times a year) only once have I been asked for identification! If you have GB registered car (and the papers for it) they just wave you through.
Not quite an answer to your question- make sure you have an EHIC for each member of the family- this might be your means of identification too. free but saves a fortune IF you have the misfortune to go to GP. I learned that the hard way!

    From P&O Irish Seas website:

    6. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
    (i) A passport for all passengers (including children
and infants), valid beyond the date of return, is
required for all trips outside the United Kingdom.
Photographic identification must be carried and
shown when required for all trips between Dublin
and Liverpool. It is your responsibility to ensure
that you have all documentation needed to comply
with the requirements of immigration, customs,
health and other relevant regulations. We reserve
the right to check and record details of such
documentation and to refuse you permission to
board if such documentation is not produced to
our satisfaction. You will be required to reimburse
us in full for any fines, repatriation or other removal
costs, detention costs and all related expenses,
which we may bear or incur by reason of your
failure to produce such documentation to the
    relevant authorities.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by a
responsible adult i.e. over 18 years of age, whilst
children of 16-17 may travel unaccompanied only
with written authority from a parent or guardian to
do so. The absence of such authority will lead to
    the refusal of embarkation.
Children travelling abroad without their Parent or
Legal Guardian but with another adult must have a
letter of consent; otherwise permission to travel
may be refused. The child must have a passport in
their own name, travel will not be permitted where
the child is included on a Parent or Guardian
passport and the Parent / Guardian is not present.

Everyone travelling is supposed to have one, although ime they don't seem to check that you have a passport. I would always take one to be on the safe side.
