Nationwide Building Society - Panel of Surveyors

I have just bought a house in Northants and was given details of a local surveyor/valuer by the Estate Agent.

The surveyor provided me with a decent quote, then asked me who the lender was and when I told him it was Nationwide, he advised me that he was not on their panel of accepted surveyors and I would be wasting my time using him.

When I spoke to the Mortgage Adviser at Nationwide, she confirmed this to be the case and stated that they would not accept a survey from anyone not on their list.

As I am currently in Scotland and visited my local Nationwide Branch, the Adviser told me that the list only contained Names of accepted surveyors and not addresses, as such she could not tell me who was suitable in the Northants area.

She further stated that she was not permitted to supply me with a copy of the list of their accepted surveyors and suggested that I do a bit of research and return with my own list, whereby she would see if any of them were on Nationwide's list.

This whole process seems a bit long winded.

Does anyone have any idea of any surveyors in Northants who are on Nationwide's accepted list?

    maybe she meant googling it

Nationwide re-appoints Countrywide Surveyors as Lead Panel Manager

I'd call them and ask for the list, or an explanation why it is confidential

    Thanks Eric,

I'm sure she did mean googling 'surveyors in Northants' and told me to return tomorrow or Saturday with my findings, which she would compare against her list.

I asked twice for a copy of the list, but she told me that she couldn't give me a copy "as the list changes all the time and may be out of date."

I couldn't exactly understand that one, as the list was on her PC screen and if it could be out of date how was she able to accurately tell that the surveyor whom I wanted to use hadn't recently been added to the list and if I go in tomorrow with someone on the list, how can she tell that they haven't recently been removed from the list?

Either way, she certainly wasn't providing me with a copy of their panel of accepted surveyors.

Seems bizarre that I am expected to go in with my 'google list' and if no-one on it marries up with their panel, then I carry on till I find someone who does.

I actually found the article about Countrywide earlier today, but they want more than double the fee that the surveyor recommended by the Estate Agent quoted, which seems a bit excessive.

Unfortunately, it may well be a case of beggars being unable to be choosers, which seems a bit harsh.

well, perhaps Countrywide will give you the list, but I suspect everyone on the panel will quote similar prices.

Personally, I'd pay only for the valuation first, and decide on any further survey later

Not too sure Countrywide will be happy to give out a list of their competitors.

I only plan to get a valuation anyway, as the house is detached and only 2 years old, so still has 8 years NHBC warranty left.

It has been well looked after and looks in mint condition, so I doubt that anything major would show up on the survey, which unless you get a full structural survey done, amounts to the surveyor looking around the house and shining a torch into the loft to check that the roof is still being held up. Nothing that I can't do myself. :)
