which is cheapest gas or electric

If the price of gas per kwh is more than the economy 7 price then electricity will be cheaper. Check what you are paying.
Gas boilers may be less efficient when just used to heat water and not the central heating. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
As penryn above states there are a number of factors - efficiency of the boiler(which can range between 65-90%) - respective price of E7 electricity and gas in your area.
Another factor is the amount of gas used simply for the pilot light on older boilers.
There probably will be little in it, and as it costs the average family £100-£150 to heat water for a year the savings either way will not be great.
However if you have gas available(and presumably gas CH) it may be worth examining if having economy 7 is any advantage at all in cost terms.0
