In all honesty, whichever is cheaper to insure. If there's little difference come back and ask again. :)

Think the corsa will be cheaper to insure clio engine entry level is a 1.2 both will be cheap to run tho. also private will be cheaper you may be able to haggle a warranty for couple month. in a garge tho.

Test drive them both if you can then see which one you prefer.

As regards to buying privately, yes it will be a lot cheaper than the garage. I'm on my 7th car since started driving and have always bought privately.

i know someone that bought the small 3 cylinder engined corsa for the same reasons as you,low insurance for thier daughter to drive it aswell.

check insurance prices first.as im sure you know this could be the difference of a good few hundred quid.

Buy Hyundai or Kia (e.g. i10 or Picanto) or even Daihatsu Serion or Toyota Aygo.

They are all similarly priced and come with 5-7 yr warranty.

Of course these are for new cars. If you are buying 06/07 plate, only Hyundai (or may be Kia) will have warranty remaining.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Yes, one of these will be far better than anything french, and a bit better than a corsa. I learnt to drive in my mum's 3-cyl corsa and, well, its a car, it works. Nothing exciting but its cheap to fix and doesn't break. I did go on to drive several thousand miles in it after passing and it could have done with a bit more bhp on the motorway. Well, in general tbh. But I would still recommend it - its just my boy racer tendencies coming out - my mum still likes it. :)

The Corsa is a pretty awful place to be IMO, especially with that 3 cylinder engine, there's a thread here complaining about it because the lack of power means you have to thrash it just to get it up a hill, which means poor fuel economy.

The Clio will be a much nicer place to be, but you have the worries of French reliability. Shouldn't be too bad at 4 years old, but, while it pains me to say it, the Corsa is probably a safer bet.

Also check insurance on larger cars. The conventional wisdom of tiny engine == cheap insurance for youngsters is long gone thanks to the growth of the "barryboy" or boy racer (and these days the women can be just as bad, only real difference is the girl racer car is more likely to be full of stick-on pink tat). Corsas and Clios are among the most popular cars in that fraternity and the insurance rates reflect this.

Something with a bit less street cred like the aforementioned Kia or even something bigger but dull like a Mondeo may well be cheaper to insure and possibly cheaper to buy too.
  • I would not touch French. A couple of the lads who work for me have Clio's. They are falling to bit and they are not that old!

Do insurance quotes for you and your daughter on both of them before you get attached to either. You could get a shock otherwise!

    Privately is better.

Also bear in mind safety, I hate to say it but even a young female driver is more likely to have a prang. If at all possible get side airbags, I have seem them save a couple of people from quite nasty injuries. Something tells me the newer shape clio (if it was out then) was pretty safe.
