I want to be able to use my new laptop (Acer 5601 AWlMi) in my van. Has anyone any suggestions/recommendations or general advice about powering a laptop from the cigar lighter?

You could get an inverter which would plug into the cigarette lighter socket, and give you a "mains" socket into which you could plug your laptop power adapter. This could also be used to power other devices!
Maplins sell them for a start, as well as other places I'm sure! You wouldn't need one that powerful as a laptop often only draws <100W of power, some as low as 60W!
Hope that helps!!0
