McAfee virus scan and firewall £24.99

Just got an email off McAfee and they wanted £44.99 for a years subscription. My Dell already has this software but if the above includes a years subscription its a good deal. Does anyone else think this is the same product? The description is not clear. I know a lot of people will be running out of protection about now.

I don't know.... but on a related subject I popped into my local Staples this week and they were selling off all over their Norton 2004 software at half price e.g. Norton Antivirus 2004 for £20 and Norton Antivirus Professional 2004 for £25 (Professional includes licences for 2 PC's and extra features). Was tempted myself to get one of them for when my current licence runs out in the summer. They had other Norton software as well - but obviously don't know if this being done nationwide

Norton is an awful resource hog though. I got rid of Norton and got McAffee recently. Its a massive improvement. You can buy 5 user licences pretty cheaply on eBay which works out about £8/machine I think.
  • pcworld are selling in store a package for 30.00, was 60.00.
includes firewall 2005, norton system works which includes antivirus 2005. i bought mine at weekend i dont know how long the offer is on.
  • Or you could get Anti-Virus and firewall software completely free. I use AVG http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ for antivirus and Sygate https://www.sygate.com as my firewall.

Completely free, and AVG has free updates as well.

    Bargain!

Remember that there are free alternatives to the commercial packages like Norton, McAfee etc. I use AVG AntiVirus and Kerio Personal Firewall, there's also Zone Alarm and no doubt a few others. Not quite as user-friendly as Norton, but if you're reasonably computer-literate then they should be fine.

Heh, randomboy, you obviously type faster than me. :)

Sorry if this is the wrong place but some of you sound like you know what your talking about and I definetly don't!!!
I had Macaffee on my laptop but got a wireless router and had to take macaffee off. I had downloaded it but it wouldn't let router work so I had to delete (not impressed) Belkin people said it should work ok if I got another copy (won't download again - will wait patiently for a cd) as belkin router would already be on. Does anyone know if this is true? Maybe it would be worth getting this macaffee deal. I tried AVG and again belkin router woudn't work:( but maybe thats doen to my lack of skill.
Any advice on what to go for would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Claire:)

It sounds a bit like the firewall is blocking the ports necessary to establish the wireless connection. I don't have any experience of McAfee though... have you tried disabling it rather than uninstalling it to see if it works?

I got the PC World package the other day with Systemworks and Personal Firewall (both 2005) for £29.99. Systemworks includes the full antivirus software and other bits to tidy up your system and test your hardware etc. As you say, the price paid was less than Norton/Symantec want to resubscribe to the old software.

Zonealarm seems a perfectly acceptable free firewall to me so I'll be sticking Personal Firewall onto Ebay to hopefully recoup some loose change.

this is why i would not recommend Mcaffee...is it a virus...no its probably the worst commercial pile of tripe ever....sure i agree that nortons is a resource hugger but its MILES better than mcafee.....

Uninstall both an see the difference....uninstall nortons and it does it relatively cleanly...unistall mcafee at your peril.....like a dog with diahorrea.

I used spamkiller once for a couple of weeks and it was utter garbage.....i also used their antivirus and uninstalled it....it screwed up my pc build and i had to reinstall windows...as it was quicker than unpicking the mess!

avg antivirus and sygate firewall are both good.....esp if you have a low spec pc

go to https://www.download.com and you can download a whole variety of things......read the reviews first but that some of them with a pinch of salt...some seem to be written by people with a grudge ie a competitor

It may actually be newer than the one on your Dell. Good spot the Virus scanner and the firewall are here for £60  http://uk.mcafee.com/root/bundles.asp
