Goodness I only went for the weekend and how this forum has moved on! Re our upcoming seaside holiday, I've asked the DGC to choose 2 or 3 interests each from this site

which is full of amazing fun things to do. I think we'll need a month not a week!0 -
Crickett - when I get annoyed about working, I find the Nella Last books really inspirational - about how OS she was and yet she was happier when she was working in the war than when she wasn't. Mind you if I'd been married to her husband, I think I would have wanted to work 24/7 as well!!!!“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I too am having one of those days. Still trying to frantically sort this house out am tempted to go on 'How Clean is Your House' it's that bad. Did nip out today to town to pay in the cheque my lovely gradmother gave me for the car. Nipped into WHsmiths and my little one wanted the new Toy Story Magazine. Couldn't believe the price £3.50. I did relent as she's been so good and hasn't had any treats for a long time. When we got to the till the lovely sales assistant asked if I had any of the Toy Story goodies that were in the mirror last week. She then gave me the lego, keyring, poster, bag, freesbie and sticker book all for free. :A My daughter thanked her lots and said 'I'm a very lucky little girl' which made the ladies day. Acts like that restore your faith in human kind and also put a smile on my little ones face. Some of the items (lego and bag) I've put away and she will get them in her stocking for christmas.
Back to work.'Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.'

Awww, thanks to all of you for making me feel better!!
Never heard of Nella Last books before... but am about to have a browse on Amazon!Sounds interesting, and seeing as I am already spending money like water, I may as well continue. Sigh! Also going to have a look at the other OS books that people have suggested on here. The Goode ones I think!
Thanks again everyone. Need to go home and pull up the drawbridge for a while I think. Nearly home time."A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort"Herm Albright 1876-19440 -
I've not been onto MSE for a couple of days and there were pages and pages of posts to read! I've caught up now
Thanks for all the fantastic ideas and links - I keep a note book to hand now and jot them down as I'm reading.
I've not heard of Nellas Last books either so will also have a nosey on Amazon later.0 -

Can you find a bit of money for a couple of halogen heaters for supplementary heating on the house? Just thinking of that bad boiler syndrome you have...
They range from about £10 upwards and I find them very effective for heating just that bit of space next to me and they are just pennies per hour to use.
Hi Ceridwen, I always thought/assumed that halogen was really expensive. Must have heard it somewhere or maybe that's just lights. Anyway, it's worth thinking about as backup heating if they are cheap. Was wondering about oil filled radiator last winter. Trying to work out what would work out cheapest.Second purse £101/100
Third purse. £500 Saving for Christmas 2014

Esther, we have one of the halogen heaters, we got it from a car boot sale for £3worth looking out for - I see them all the time at them round here.
I always thought halogen would be expensive as well, but it's quite cheap. Ours has three heat settings, they use 400w, 800w and 1200w. We find the 400w more than enough for our living room, and we don't need it on all evening! 400w can cost as little as 5p per hour to run, though obviously that depends on your elecricity prices!0 -
I was ready to throttle Nella Last's husband by the time I'd finished her book. Glad its not just me !0

We've got a halogen heater and my MIL has had about 4 of them. One of our bars has died and at least one on all 4 of MIL's has too.
We've got an oil heater that DH has had for years and it still works like a bomb and doesn't cost much to run. We use it upstairs on the landing and it keeps upstairs quite warm at night, as no radiators, only gas heating through a few grids downstairs.Felines are my favourite
