Job loss only one wage tax releif/benefits

Hello, can any one offer any advice, please
My partner has been made redundant from a part time job, but was not earning enough to be able to claim a job seekers allowance, we have two young children, and needed the extra income that this part time job provided,
but now we are being told that we are unable to claim any beneifits.
Because of my earnings in excess of (31k) we are excluded from a lot of benefits. I also have a company car that when looking at claiming anything the taxable benefit is always added to my earnings pushing this up even further.
I am concidering taking a backward step with my carear and earning less money to be enable us to be able to make a claim. I have worked hard to get the job that I do, but now feel that all the extra pressure etc. it is not worth it, all things conciderd, I know my salary is quite good but when the tax etc. is taken out and we are excluded from tax credits and now job seekers allowances it hardly seems worth it.
Does anyone know if we would be entitled to claim anything?

You have a decent salary ..a good job..self respect and have probably worked hard to get there. Why would you want to give it up just to claim benefits
The answer is staring you in the face ..your partner gets another job....!!I bet there are thousands that use this site that would like to earn your salary with a company car as well ...dont throw that away. I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes

I am anoyed at the amount of tax that I have pay, I think it should be based on a joint houshold income not just one persons income, within that household.
My partner is activly seeking new employement but it is proving difficult to find work that will fit in arround the children, as I am not always home to be able to support,
But hey something will turn up!0 -

I don't understand your point. Do you think you should pay less tax because your money is in effect split between two? No one likes paying tax, but why you think that you should pay less than a single person (who could also have two children) is beyond me?Gone ... or have I?0 -
Thought CTC paid out to income of over £50k?0

How will you be better off downsizing your job and claiming benefits?(AKA HRH_MUngo)

it does if you have children but only at around £10 p/wI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
we earn just under £20,000 and get £152 a week in tax credits, but £43 of that is a dissability premium. For 3 kids
you should have no problems living on your sort of money why take a step backwards.
If wanting to go on jsa as a couple you would only get £90 a week, i really don't understand what your getting at.
Why can't your hubby work full time.0 -
The also the fact that its illegal to give up any income to intentionally increase the amounts of benefits available , plus to give up an extremely well paid job to claim benefits would be a way to almost instant debt as most people on higher incomes have more outgoings than benefits would ever pay out enough to cover.
theres also the problem that even if you cut your income to say £15K now, you would have earned around £12K already, making an annual income of around £27K, still too mcuh to get any benefits (except minimum CTC)- even if you gave up work completely, once your husbands earnings are taken in to account, you will have earned enough so that the payable tax credits may not be enough to pay your bills + you wont get any help from hosuing benefit if you have a mortgage, your on your own.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. I think I had better shut up, by the look of this!
But my main point is as DMG24 stated, I beleive that my tax allowance should be made up by joining my allowance with my partners,at the moment I have a negative tax code and with only my single wage coming in to the household.
I understand we all have to pay taxes, I also take CIS point that this year we have allready earned too much to claim. It is just a bit concerning when you are mortgaged up to the hilt, and a source of income is cut off, and after paying taxes in the region of what some people earn, that you are not entitled to anything, back0
