Blimey, you we'ren't wrong when you said they needed force to push them in - in my frustration, I REALLY put some elbow into it, and guess what - they clicked into place (I was afraid of breaking it before).
Still not seen by MS backup though - I might try to find some other software.
I've just seen a 100/200gb DAT drive for 200 quid, I might just get that instead to be honest.
The 40 gb limit (as you correctly summised, the jpgs wouldn't compress much) probably wouldn't be enough in any case for a back up of all my personal stuff as well as my incremental database.

You could get quite a few hard disks and usb caddies for that sort of money..
