Trouble wiring a double light switch

Hi,
I've changed all the plug sockets in my living room successfully but I've hit trouble changing the double light switch.
The wiring looked a bit unusual and must have been there since the houses were built, I copied the wiring the best I could but still no light!
The wiring looked like this:
Switch 1: Red wire to L2, Yellow wire to COM
Switch 2: Red wire to L2, Unmarked wire connecting L2 to COM
Like I say I tried copying directly and it didn't work.
Can anyone correct whatever mistake I've made or suggest another solution?
Thanks

you need to explain your lighting system a bit better.
what exactly do the two switches control?Get some gorm.0 -
the two lights in the living room0

normally you would have a red to each com terminal, and the blacks to the L1s.Get some gorm.0

Are there any cables in connector blocks at the back of the switch as it seems the live is looped between both switches to feed the lights. I presume each light is separately controlled by by a switch?0

Thanks for all the replies so far....
Yes there is a connector block at the back that has two wires going into it on the left hand side, nothing on the right
each switch controls one light
Switch one has a red and yellow wire
Switch two has a red and another small wire that was in the some port as the red and then connected to another port on switch two
Hope thats clarifies it0 -

These could be your Earths...Do these cables at the back connect into a brass lug into the back-box of the switch, or do they go into a plastic connector block?marbleheadj wrote: »each switch controls one light
Do any other switches control the same lights, or is it just one switch per light?marbleheadj wrote: »Switch one has a red and yellow wire

Any chance you can take a photo of the switch connections please?
