Motability Car Insurance Problem

Hi All, I am new to the forum , so have a problem I hope I can get help with, I obviously cannot name insurers and the likes so here goes, briefly.
Six months ago my Motability car was stolen, Police recovered the car, burnt out, written off. My Father had the car at the time as I cannot drive an he had used it on my behalf, he insists keys were left in the hall of his house, Insurers say no, mustve been left in on or around the vehicle.
There are 2 aspects to this, Motability now insist i pay 10k as the insurers have repudiated the claim. And I cannot have a new car through the scheme, I am a wheelchair user, partially sighted and have arthritic problems. My DLA is being withheld to pay off the 10k and I am not insured for my carers cars, so this is leaving me housebound, as the DLA being withheld means I cannot afford transport, my condition is worsening and I am stressed about a 10k bill.
Any help or advice on any aspects of this would be appreciated and I will give more details if and when asked.

Household insurance is not going to cover a car.

The insurer is Royal Sun Alliance - they insure the Motability fleet. They are normally pretty good with this as the fleet is the largest in the UK and presents some unique challenges. They will not have taken this decision lightly because they will fully appreciate the implications for you.

Whereabouts are the keys now? Were you able to hand in 2 sets of keys?
Were the police happy with your fathers explanation? Did they catch anyone is connection with the crime who could have shed light on the matter?
Could the keys have been fished off the table in the manner suggested by pnpsuknet?

If you are able to show that you and your father have not acted recklessly with the keys, then you need to proceed down the formal complaints route as set out in the policy booklet. Some details can be found here - http://www.motability.rsagroup.co.uk/fullsite/complaints_proceedure.asp
  • thanks for the replies, the keys were left in the hallway of the house on a windowsill, the front door was not locked, though as shut, the thieves have not been caught although the car was used in a ram raid type robbery and the thief was on cctv though not caught as yet. My Father explained that the keys were always left in the same place but the Policeman said he 'doubted' that someone would have entered the house. He said as much in the crime report, I have read other items on such issues and believe he may have acted carelessly at worst but not recklessly.
I have issued appeals to both RSA (yes they do indeed insure all Motability cars) and to Motability, I just thought someone on here may know how speed these processes up, Motability have said 8 weeks for appeal to be heard, they are at 7 weeks 6 days now and inform me that im am 65th on the list, and they get through 2 appeals per day on average !
