I have half a doz of these growing for the first time this year. I wanted to ask when they are ready to lift ? Do they flower ?

    We've just lifted half of our shallots. The leaves were all turning yellow and starting to lie down/fall over. The shallots themselves had started to lift above ground and seperate into individual onions. Don't think you're supposed to wait until they flower...

    When they turn brown as Emptypockets said. I lifted mine last week and pickled 8 large jars...my hands still smell of onion

    Can I ask how you store them ? Is it just like onions ? I lifted the green part as well, can I plait them and hang up ?

    Yes, hang them somewhere to dry and then just use as normal for cooking etc. As long as they're stored somewhere cool and dry they'll be fine for ages.

    I've pickled half of mine last weekend, rest to do. Will pickle the small ones and hang the bigger ones I think. Might chuck a few in with the roasties on Sunday.
