British Gas cancellation fee

I've just sorted a full switch for my parents, moving from an Price Promise that has expired over to EON.

The paperwork that she had showed that it expired in April so assumed that everything was ok. She even contacted BG to advise them of moving and they finalised bills.

The switch has finally taken place and she has now been landed with a £70 cancellation, £35/per utility.

She contacted them yesterday and apparently the letter she received mentioning that the price promise had ended, stated that they actually automatically renew you into another price promise unless you tell them otherwise. Unfortunately, my mum didn't read this correctly and like most things, assumed that once the contract had finished, you would drop back onto a standard unless you tell them.

I'm going to see her later to see if she still has the original letter, but she fears she has thrown it out as it was all sorted. Apparently they did comment that if it had been done by a certain date in June then she wouldn't of been charged. I've just checked my emails and it was all registered on May 22 so I'm sure they would of been notified by then and pretty sure my mum contacted them the following Monday, May 24th.

I'm going to try and fight this but not sure if anyone can please advise.

thanks

    Hi Stuarta99

I would suggest contacting the energy supplier directly, in writing. This is the best way of lodging a complaint with these people - advise them you are unhappy with the charges and feel they are unfair as your mother has been a good customer. I would also suggest that you request they put a hold on the payment request until your complaint has been resolved, so you don't receive any cheeky demands.

    Hope this helps
