Bought a pair of suede shoes, want a refund, rights?

Quick query,
I bought a pair of black suede shoes for a wedding. The shop was badly lit and I only noticed today while I was getting ready to pack them that the suede 'pile' is totally different on the front of the two shoes. It's pretty obvious in natural light.
Now at the bottom of the receipt it says
'All goods must be returned within 7 days for a creditnote or exchange. Sale goods cannot be exchanged'.
So I called them and said I wanted to return them and couldn't until early next week (still within 7 days). After I mentioned the line above I stated I only wanted a refund. The manager was mildly evasive and wouldn't get into it on the phone prior to seeing the shoes.
I believe I'm entitled to a full refund by law, however can someone clarify what my rights are?
Thanks.

If the shoes are faulty you're entitled to a refund yes.0

My opinion would be that the shoes are not faulty as such, so you may not be entitled to a refund, just a credit note or exchange as stated. However, if you go to the shop and explain you may get an understanding member of staff who will agree to refund you.0

I'd say they're faulty if they don't match. Who the hell would be happy wearing a pair of shoes that aren't the same?
That a pair of shoes are identical is about the minimum I'd expect when buying a new pair of shoes.

Well I've already been quite forthright with the lady manager on the phone so. . .
I'll play hardball if needs be.0 -

You never know, you might get lucky and pop in on her day off! I'm guessing the odd piling is probably just on that specific pair of shoes, so they may well offer another pair as replacement. If that's the case you want to stress that you were only going to wear them to a wedding which has since passed, so a replacement is no good to you now.
It's worth a go, good luck with it.0 -
I don't agree. These are suede shoes remember and as such you can reasonably expect some variation in finish.I'd say they're faulty if they don't match. Who the hell would be happy wearing a pair of shoes that aren't the same?

That's not like you...I don't agree.
You may expect that, you may be happy wearing mismatched shoes around and that's your choice. These are suede shoes remember and as such you can reasonably expect some variation in finish.
Most people however would not be satisfied with a pair of shoes that don't match, whether they're made out of suede, leather or whatever other material you care to mention.

Of course you are entitled to a refund.
Take them back at a busy time and talk to the manager in a prominent position in the store. If the manager refuses a refund show other customers the type of shoes this store sells, the manager will soon change her mind to get rid of you. It's worked for me.0
