Credit card help

Options
I have never had any credit, no card or loans. I have started a new job which requires me to go overseas and I would like to get a card for a bit of security.
I have been with my bank for around 3 years, have my salary paid direct in. never had a 0 or negative balance, never missed a payment on DD etc

I cannot get any credit cards I have applied even at my own bank and have been declined. I have checked my credit report.
I do rent, I am on electoral roll at current and preious address, there is no adverse credit, no loans or credit cards, 3 open bank accounts all satisfactory, no ccjs or defauls and I have checked with experian, equifax and call credit and all give me a rating between 685 and 770.

What I do not understand is why?
I have only tried to apply for credit recently as I havent had a need in the past. I have 2 bank accounts and 1 savings account. My phone is business I have a Pay as you go mobile because i also have been refused a mobile contract phone...Please tell me what I need to do. Incedently I also earn £60k+ per year and cannot get my head around this at all:(

If you have had no credit products in the past its harder for lenders to judge whether you will use the credit responsibly, which is why you are struggling to get a card.

How many applications have you made so far?
Have you tried for any of the subprime cards?

Surely everyone has to start somewhere...where do I start?
  • Hmmm something seems a bit strange. Why not do a Footprint Only Pre Check for the Barclaycard initial here:

    https://letmechoose.barclaycard.co.uk/

This quick check won't affect your credit report but will advise you if your likely to be accepted before you apply. ;)

The problem you have now is that too many credit card applications may be temporary preventing you from applying too. Maybe wait a while (if you can) or get a PrePaid Card like Cashplus gold card? You could pre-load a few hundred pounds on it in case of emergencies.

You can always appeal your banks decision to decline you. Point out the way you conduct your bank account etc. Go in and speak to one of your banks advisor's and explain the situation and see what they suggest.

Sounds like you may have a problem because of the large number of applications you have done recently.
The fact that you have only recently started this job might well also go against you.

If you cannot get a subprime card like Vanquis then the next option would be a prepaid cashplus credit builder credit card (as in my link above) , which after 12months will count as a repaid credit product and should put you in a better position to start increasing your credit profile.
Alternatively wait 6months with no more applications and then apply for another subprime card.

Or see if your bank will give you a small overdraft, if you use this sensibly it too can help start gradually improving your rating.

I could apply for a small overdraft, but I would never go into it, my account balance is in 000's..would it make a difference to my credit rating?
