    The points still stand:

    1. Other employees who have been taken from temp get a pay rise not pay cut.
    2. Rest of employee population are disgusted they have offered this to my wife (giving ground to point 1)
    3. The agency isnt a charity, the rate they pay the agency pays my wife the 6.50 an hour, plus NI contributions, plus holidays (wife gets SSP) plus the overheads of the agency and the profit (it is a business afterall). If they cut out the agency they keep all this the same and remove the overheads of the agency and the profit. The days of being employed for years and years are over... even if she was permanent she can be sacked in 2 years and get no benefit whatsoever (redundancy payout)
    4. 12,000/260 days/8 hours = £5.76 an hour (below min wage), 13520/260 days/8 hours = £6.50 an hour. Pay cut = 11%
    5. As muskoka says, they want her, they panicked around and tried a cheeky offer. Other members of staff back up this view point. If she was like the rest of the posters she should lay down and get walked all over in life? Or should she stand up for what she deserves? And in the end its not even about money, its about being respected and rewarded for her hard work. In the meeting the managers were totally caught off guard and had no defence for the following arguments (they just sat sheepishly silent):

    1. I work through breaks, i dont book hours, i always get my work done
    2. I've never let you down, never been sick
    3. You made me feel demoralised and dissapointed like my work wasnt appreciated.

You haven't quite worked it out right. I take it she works 9-5 and you've taken that as 40 hours? It isn't. For the purpose of salaries the lunch hour is not counted, so she's only working 35 hours per week. The hourly rate they've offered is £6.57.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
  • If she's so disgruntled by it she should go somewhere else. Tell her to get the agency to find her something else.

Why is she not taking the other job at 17/18k that you mentioned if she's wanting a higher wage?

I disagree with people who have said temps are usually paid more for two reasons. The first is that if perm staff find out a temp gets paid more for doing the same job, it would cause uproar. The second is to stop exactly what has happened here. Not many people would accept a role they have been doing on a temp basis for less money permanently?

OP, it is unfortunate, but there is little you can do about it. The company are doing what many are in the current economic climate and trying to save money. Her only option really if she won't accept it is to look elswhere.

    *sigh*...

Yes i've worked it out right.. she works 40 hours a week... she gets paid hourly 6.50 an hour now and her pay slip states 40 hours x6.50.

She works 8->4:30 and gets an UNPAID 30 MINS. i.e 8 hours a day x 5 days = 40 hours. And to make matters even more worse... shes been working often through her 30 mins unpaid lunch and not even booking it. She really has tried hard to impress them.. and it has worked but not exactly how she expected (i.e taken advantage of working hard lol)

    Finally someone who sees sense.

Who in their right mind would be happy and jumping jor joy if someone said:

' Hi, we offer you a permanent job, working same hours, and same everything but we will pay you 11% less..... oh an by the way for the first 2 years your rights won't change either... isnt it great?'

Erm.... which is what every person on here has been saying they'd agree to. Thankfully we dont require wife salary to survive so she has got a spine to negotiate. You won't get anything in life if you dont fight and ask for it.

Just out of interest are all you people stuck on minimum wage salaries working your asses off, happy to not get a pay rise as your bosses take the bounty of your efforts? Most likely not... but thats what you are suggesting.

An update to all this is the other department are desperately trying to take her in light of this news, mainly because she is pretty good but also because of the samn right cheeky offer they put forward.

And to state again... its not the fact of 12k or even 13k.. she'd prob start on 12k at a new company anyway.. its the blatant fact her efforts haven't been rewarded or recognised.. a cheeky pay cut has been offered when shes been working hard staying late and putting in the hours.

Who would be happy with a pay cut when you do such things?

Unfortunately it is an employers market at the moment, if the company was to offer this job at the minimum wage rate on the open market they would be flooded with applications, so the only choice is take it or leave it.
Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.

Well I only did agency work for about a decade so I guess I'm not qualified to talk. My brother did 5 years on placement at various local authorities in council tax benefit offices and was on three times what the employed staff were.
