Ghosting when watching DVDs

I have a Panasonic Viera 32", a Panasonic DVD and a Humax Freeview PVR all scarted together. When I watch DVDs I can get quite bad ghosting, i.e. I can see a vague image of whatever's on telly behind the actual DVD picture.

I can get round this by setting the TV to a channel which doesn't have a picture (I use 303) but does anyone know what's actually causing this and whether there's a neater solution? TBH, the DVD picture was better on my old CRT telly.

Panasonic Viera Plasma by any chance or LCD?

I'll assume Plasma as it's their favourite.

    How old is the TV?
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
  • Suggest you try an HDMI cable if you can? But unsure if this will resolve the issue with the telly... thatcable make a good cheap one according to what hifi.. or perhaps borrow one if poss to try this as a solution

It's LCD not plasma. Sorry should have specified. I thought about HDMI as I wondered if it was a problem with the scart cables. But I'm not sure if my DVD player has an HDMI connection. Isn't that stuff all a bit new?

    SCARTed together IN WHAT WAY?

Each box connected to a different SCART on the TV, or one box feeding through the other, and only one connected to the TV?

    Or some other config?

Do you have anything connected with RF leads as well as SCARTs?

Well the advantage of HDMI into an LCD TV is that it's digital going to Digital. While a Scart carrys analogue signal into a digital TV, so there's some processing there, however I don't think this will be the issue of ghosting.

Ghosting is one of the common issues with LCD's, so it depends on the frequency and if there's an issue with any motion software on the TV.

Best thing, take the model number and go check out AV-forums owners thread for your model.

Although the OP said ghosting what he described doesn't sound like ghosting. My interpretation of what he said is that somehow the TV picture is still present when the input is switched to another source so there are two different picture onscreen at the same time. This sounds more like a TV fault to me than anything to do with it being an LCD or the type of cable.

My very first thing to do would be reseat all the scarts. Then I'd try swapping the PVR and DVD round and see if the problem stays with the particular TV scart. If it does and there isn't a spare scart then options are limited - carry on as now, try a scart switch and just the good scart or pay for repair. If it moves with the external unit (which I doubt it will) then replace that.

    Hello,

Have seen this many times before.

The solution is to remove/disconnect pin 19 of the SCART cable at the end that plugs into the TV.

It's mentioned in this WIKI article here which also describes the problem you are having:
