Best student account if your credit rating isn't the best?

Title says it all really - I'm about to start a postgraduate course, and my credit rating took a bit of a beating over my student years.. Does anybody know which bank it'd be best to apply with? I've been turned down by a few for student accounts :(

I'd like to know the answer to this although my gut feeling is that with a poor credit rating you wouldnt receive a student account with borrowing facilities.
  • by bad do you mean ccjs/defaults or just missed a few payments here n there?

If your referring to me? I havent tried applying as I know I will be turned down. :(
  • Ok confession time, my credit rating is prob as bad as it gets without being bankrupt lol.

Anyway, returning to uni later this month and tried the Halifax and HSBC for student accounts, but was turned down.

However, applied online for RBS and was accepted immediately. Cheque book and debit/guarantee card arrived within a week. I only asked for a £500 overdraft which was granted, and I've already used some of this for books, although I haven't actually credited any money yet! And also is you use the ref 'Student 55' they pay you £55 after your first loan instalment is paid in.

    Hope that helps a little....

It sounds great, unfortunately though I owe RBS money on a credit card as part of my DMP so even if I got the account they would probably take the money from my new account.

Shame. Anyone know of any others?
  • sgx.saint - I managed to get a student account with a default and it was only from about a year previous to the application
