Hi
I have just taken over a flat in June, and took over previous tenants electricity suppliers Npower.
I live in a house converted to 4 flats.
I have 2 storage heaters, 1 in a large lounge, and 1 in a large bedroom.
A shower and an electric towel rail in the bathroom.
The hot water to the kitchen sink and the bathroom sinkis by one of those mini type water heaters that you wash your hands to.
I have an electric cooker A rated brand new and a single fridge and single freezer both A rated brand new and a washing maching A rated brandnew in the kitchen
My Npower electric is supplied under there Econ 7 No Standing Charge tarriff:-
23.1p per kWh per day
16.11p per kWh per day above728kWh per annum
4.5p per kWh at night
Using Uswitch to compare a cheaper rate it came out at £744.05 for Npower based on an annual usage.
On the same annual useage the cheapest comparison came out as Scottish Power Online ..Limited Avaiability @
19.852p per kWh per day
9.023p per kWh above 900 kWh per annum
4.351p per kWh per night
cost £448.61p per annum based on same usage as Npower
a saving of £295.45p
Sounds good:j:beer:BUT is it, as this is my first time with electric storage heaters Im worried that it might not be :j:beer: but :eek::eek: the annual consumption is correct based on talking to the previous tenants who had a lifestyle much the same as me.
My electric meter has 2 readings Rate 1 and Rate 4 and Im assuming that this means its on Economy 7.
The above comparison for Scottish Power seems good they gave me a comparison for Npower Sign Online 19 Economy 7
based on same usage it came out as
18.83p per kWh per day
10.46p per kWh per day above 723kWh per annum
4.57p per kWh per night
a saving of £242.61p per annum
I dont read good reports of Npower though must admit the takeover of the power when I moved in moved smoothly, I dont wish to make a mess of my final chosen supplier so any advice on the above comparisons would be helpful.
I have acces to online for billing if needed and am careful and reckon I could cut the annual usage used to base these comparisons on, this energy lark is quite a minefield till you know what your doing which I dont, well not yet lol :rotfl:
Thanks for reading any comments are most welcome

2 things you need to be sure you are doing right with the comparison sites
1. Are you using the actual annual kwh for day (normal Rate 1) and night (E7 Rate 4) units from the previous tenant?
2. Beware of quoting the tarrif without recognising if any discounts are applicable for online, direct debit, anything.
The comparrison sites take all of this into account, so you may be ok with your numbers. Just run through the information you input a few times to check different scenarios.
Maybe not relevant for you, but also try adding the day and night kwh together and input the total as if you do not have E7. You will then see if you are using enough units at night to justify being on E7.0 -
Assuming you did the comparison using annual usage in kWh, and that you used the right split between day & night units, then the result is probably correct.
You could double check by seeing if you get the same result from another comparison site.
Then the only thing you need to be mindful of is that it is based on the previous occupant's consumption and you are assuming yours will be the same."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
A monthly figure of around £40 when using storage heaters and the other things you have seems too low. Are you sure you're not basing your annual figures on what you are using just now in the summer.
What annual kw are you using in the comparison sites ie total and % on cheap rate?0 -
Hi TotalDespair
The fact that you are able to manage your account online means that you will be able to get the best prices available from all suppliers and also monitor you consumption more closely. When you move into a new property the online accounts are great to help you understand how much electricity you are actually using. As you can update meter readings as often as you wish, you can monitor it weekly, fortnightly, monthly etc. With electric only properties, the consumption varies greatly between summer use and winter use so don't expect to pay what your using monthly now all year round.
I have attached a link below which gives you additional information on our online service. I hope this information helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.
