Fitness First - 12 month contract

My 19 year old has signed a 12 month contract with FF (wasn't aware it was 12 months) paying £32.95pm. Hasn't used it - obviously thought he would - and has now been told he can't cancel it. If he's unemployed (he works part-time) he's been told that he can 'freeze' it for the rest of the 12 months, but then it will start up again.
Am I being unreasonable ? - but I'm livid that he's committed to this - there's so many gyms where you can pay monthly and cancel whenever you like that I think this approach is almost underhand. It wasn't made clear that it was 12 months and the small print is unbelievable.
The only way he can get out of it is for medical reasons or if he moves somewhere which doesn't have a FF within a 10 mile radius.
Any advice or thoughts. OK< OK< I'm being overprotective ??? But I hate to see people being ripped off  and I think this is what, in his naivity, has happened. I'm even thinking about getting him to pretend he's out of work and moved to his grandparents (who are outside the FF radius).
Bit extreme - illegal ?? Any comments anyone ??? Thank you.

I think that having to commit to 12 months is standard. I had the same with total fitness. I just had to pay up. I did sign a contract after all...:heart2:I have a child with autism.:heart2:0

It is pretty clear on the FF contracts that the minimum term is twelve months.
I'd be mad at your son for not reading the contract before he signed it!Gone ... or have I?0
