Banks and credit checks

I'm mid way through sorting my debt out and i have applied for a natwest step account. I did it online and i have a feeling that i'm going to be declined. I applied monday morning but haven't had any confirmation at all.
So i was thinking if i get declined, i'd sign up for the Barclays basic account, i've read in the basic bank thread they don't do credit checks. But i was on the online chat with Barclays and the advisor said that do do credit check and the account is subject to status.
I'm not bankrupt and have no CCJ's but i do have debt which i've ignored for years. Is there anywhere i can get a bank account? if i do get declined at natwest is it worth going and speaking to someone at Barclays?

You just need to make a point of telling the bank in question you only want a basic bank account.
Basic bank accounts are not generally credit scored they will just check your identity etc.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
I was in the same boat as you NG7 (ignored debts for years, though I'm paying them off now and I should be debt free by October 2011), but I went into NatWest to request a Step Account. I told the manager of the branch up front that I had bad credit but he said that shouldn't be an issue. It took about half an hour but in the end I was accepted A-Ok. Hope you are successful too NG7.
Gone from Poor to Excellent Credit. Proud of my recovery. Never going back to the sub prime!
