Bank payment error

Hello all,

I have come home to find a letter from my bank today. It tells me that nearly two years ago a payment was made into my business account in error (almost £2000).

The letter goes on to tell me to fill in a permission slip for the bank to take the money out of my account. There is no apology or explanation.

Looking back at my statements and books I have found the payment. It was made during a manic few months after starting up my business (I am a self employed plasterer). I had assumed the payment was a vat return after buying my van, as the payment was labeled "VAT REPAY".

This is a huge amount of money for me at the moment and could be enough to break my business. Any advise on what to do or where I stand legally would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Tom

Offer to pay the amount back in manageable monthly payments.

I can appreciate it that you said it was a manic time, but if i were you i would sack your accountant, he should have spotted such an error.

Obviously it has to be paid back. No choice in the matter.
Offer to pay it back in installments. Even if they insisted that it was all paid at once you wouldnt be any worse off than you would have been if it hadnt been paid in, if you see what I mean.
Could you not get a loan and get it out of the way forever.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
