How much should storage cost? Real costs needed!

Hi there, was surprised that there's no guidance on how much is "reasonable" per sq ft of storage.

I've been doing a bit of hunting and found ENOURMOUS variances in self-store costs for about 100 to 140 sq ft of storage. The cheapest was about £20 per week, the most expensive £160 per week!!!

I think this needs some investigation and feedback from money savers on how much they actually pay for self-storage. I know there are big regional variances (my cheapest was near Bath, most expensive in West London) but even 'national' companies have huge variances and hate to give their prices online and all want to "quote" on an individual job. It's a bloody metal box on a site, how much consideration do they need to give it! I don't like the lack of openess so can fellow money savers please help and give the prices they paid or were quoted for various storage options?

Until about a month ago I was paying £17 per week for 20sqft (5*4) at Pickfords in Bath. I think the larger units work out slightly cheaper per sq ft but didn't keep any of the quotes I got at the time.

Be aware, with such a wide variation, that some places are quoting you inclusive of their own insurance which will invariably be more expensive than contents insurance from elsewhere (although it is difficult to find insurers who will cover your belongings in a storage unit).
  • We charge £164 every 4 weeks for 100sqft and we are the cheapest in my area.

I've used The Big Yellow and always found them very efficient and quite competitive.
