claiming for a laptop via house insurance - lloyds tsb

I have a 2.5 year old laptop which at the time cost me £899, great laptop untill a couple months back the screen would freeze and the picture would go all multi coloured matrix unabling you to do anything. This fault become of a regular occurance to the point where after 5 mins of being on it appear and therefore be unusable. I researched into the fault and everything pointed to it being the graphic card. Further looking into it it would seem that on my model 'Sony Vaio FZ11s' sony and nvidia admitted to there being a fault with the graphic card on distrabution on some laptops and would repair it free of charge IF it was this fault, even out of warrenty . Ideal!
Anyway Sony pick it up smoothly then just over a week later they called me only to say IT wasnt this fault .....!!!!!!.....and would cost £850 to fix it orrrrrr £150 just to have it sent back !
Not the best altimatum but decided to leave it and look about, anyway today sony have sent my laptop back free of charge so it would seem, weirdly after not given them any answer on doing so, but happy not to have paid £150 for postage for no reason lol

So now im wondering how easy is it to go through home insurance to get it replaced of repaired? Its a great laptop and unfortunately im not in the position to fork out too much at the moment especially that of what sony where wanting -£850!!!

Or i know this may not be the PC thing to do but should i spill some water over it to make it looks more accident as it seems its more of a internal malfunction that has maybe happened over time? havent had any claims on home insurance for years or come to think any ?!
Has anyone been in this position and could kindly lend some advice
also does your premium go up alot if you do claim ?
thanks

Your premium would definately go up and you would be comitting fraud

Sony are expensive, but cheap quality. You are commiting fraud by doing a false claim

one other thing if you do damage it and try to claim, hope they dont send it to sony as it will be on computer about the first issue.
  • They would be able to see that its not just liquid damage, nice way to commit fraud (and hopefully have your policy cancelled).

Not to mention the impact that fraud has on everyone elses premiums!

Mmm! most Insurers will arrange for the laptop to be interrogated to see if the damage is consistent with the circumstances that you have outlined.

To stage an accident of damage is fraud, your policy will be cancelled and you will need to declare why it was cancelled to future insurers. Even if you don't declare that your policy has been cancelled for fraud any potential insurers are likely to find out.

The hassle to you long term will be significantly more than a damaged laptop.
