That depends which browser you are using.
In Firefox 3.6.6 you hit Edit, Preferences, Applications, scroll down to the mailto entry and choose your email client from the drop-down box.0 -
if you are a windows user, you should be able to select default email client through the control panel. how depends on which operating system you're using... please advise.Friendly greeting!0

It sounds like your browser (internet explorer probably) is trying to boot up microsoft outlook as the standard email client when you click on an email address in a webpage. You don't need to use this as your email service, and if you use a hotmail account via the internet, e.g. googlemail, yahoo, hotmail etc. then you won't need to use outlook at all.
The easiest way is not to click on the link! Just open up your email and type the address in manually. Posters who are more whizzy with microsoft/windows might be able to give you a neater solution or tell you how to set your microsoft outlook email up. But I wouldn't bother."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

Just to reiterate what the others have said-
When you click on an email link in your browser, windows looks for a program that can send emails. Often this would be outlook or outlook expess (now windows live mail).
Your pc is bound to have been supplied with windows live mail (its free/part of Vista and win7). If you have never used it then a profile has not yet been created. Hence the browser will see it as not having been properly configured.
Outlook is part of the office suite and a paid for program.
Once you enter your email details into windows live mail it will automatically tell the browser that it will handle email links.0 -
